In October 2007, Friendx of Africa partnered with Shiloh Missions, The Northern California Compassion Network, and The World Exchange for Health and Human Services in Oakland, California to ship medical supplies and equipment in a 40-foot container to hospitals and clinics in Cameroon, Africa. The goods were shipped in the care of Cameroon Youth for Jesus (CYJ), a local youth group with whom Friendx of Africa already has a working relationship. After the goods arrived, two teams comprising of missionaries and medical personnel left the US for Cameroon to clear and distribute the goods, conduct a health fair, and organize an evangelistic outreach. The cities of Yaounde and Ebolowa were chosen as the locations for these programs.
CYJ had recruited local churches and pastors to partner for the outreach in Ebolowa as well as about 10 local doctors, 15 nurses, and 7 medical students, who came to Ebolowa to volunteer their time and services with the primary aim of touching lives. The health-workers initially consulted with the patients and dispensed needed prescriptions from the inventory of shipped medications. The team purchased some medication that were needed but not among the shipped goods that were available locally such as anti-malaria, antibiotics, and de-worming medication. With these medications, the children’s clinic was particularly equipped.
While attending to the crowds that came for the health fair, a section of the team went with one of the local pastors to the local prison where the team gave exhortations and presented the prisoners with vitamins, pain killers, and other-over-the-counter medications. This experience was such a blessing to the team since it was a real demonstration of love shown by action.
After all the outreach activities were completed, the team was able to present the shipped equipment to eight institutions including hospitals, clinics, rehabilitation centers, and schools. At the end of the period, the team was able to accomplish all that it set out to do in spite of all the challenges encountered.
In October 2008, FOA will partner again with CYJ to conduct a third annual health campaign at Kribi, a coastal town in Cameroon. More information on the outreach will be posted soon. Meanwhile if you need any information on this outreach, please contact us at mail@friendxofafrica.org.
